Mi Terro

Mi Terro, based in the United States, is a synthetic biomaterials company that produces home-compostable plastic alternative biomaterials made from plant-based agricultural waste. Mi Terro uses a range of biopolymers and natural fibers, aiming to maximize the utilization of side streams, second-generation (non-food feedstocks), and certified biomass.
We do not convert agricultural waste into beverages or snacks like other companies do.Instead, we re-engineer protein compounds from low-value waste to replace single-use plastics and paper products, while simultaneously providing additional income for farmers around the world. Unlike current microplastic alternatives based on plant polysaccharides (such as cellulose and algae), the performance of Mi Terro’s plant protein materials does not rely on chemical cross-linking. This enables them to rapidly and completely decompose in natural environments. Our proprietary technology re-engineers agricultural waste into plastic alternative biomaterials. Our biomaterials are monolayer, and at pilot scale, they are 20–40% cheaper than other bio-based and fossil-based feedstocks, are home-compostable, ocean-degradable, heat-sealable, offer excellent water and oxygen barrier properties, have low thickness, and are potentially edible. Our technology can be applied not only to flexible and rigid packaging but also serve as an ingredient for pet food.
